A Game of Thrones, the first entry in the popular A Song of Ice and Fire high-fantasy book series, was written by acclaimed science-fiction and fantasy writer George RR Martin and published by Bantam Spectra in 1996. The novel was met with immediate critical acclaim, winning the 1997 Locus Award and garnering nominations for the 1997 Nebula Award and 1997 World Fantasy Award. The 1997 Hugo Award for Best Novella was awarded to Martin’s Blood of the Dragon, a work comprised entirely of A Game of Thrones excerpts. The novel has gone on to receive high praise from prominent publications such as TIME Magazine, The New York Times, and LA Times.
A Game of Thrones sold well enough to spawn four sequels over the following 15 years, with at least two more planned installments forthcoming. In the months leading up to the HBO television adaptation of Martin’s series, A Game of Thrones enjoyed renewed interest. The book achieved New York Times best-seller status in January 2011 and reached the No. 1 position seven months later.
